Starting life on my own at 15 was tough. I had no home, no steady support, and a future that felt uncertain. But then, I found surfing. It wasn’t just a sport or hobby—it became my anchor, my passion, and eventually my life’s purpose. This is the story of how a surfboard in Drake Bay, Costa Rica, transformed my path and helped me build a full-time life riding waves around the world.

Finding Surfing in Drake Bay
When I first left home, I landed in Drake Bay, a remote and beautiful part of Costa Rica. I was working on a boat and helping build hotels, but the real turning point came when I was given my first surfboard. At 15, I had never surfed before, but that board opened a new world for me.
Learning to surf wasn’t easy. The ocean was unpredictable, and I had to teach myself through trial and error. But every wave I caught gave me a sense of freedom and control I hadn’t felt before. Surfing became more than a skill; it became my way to cope with the challenges of living alone and uncertain.
Building Skills and Community in Marbella
After Drake Bay, I moved closer to Marbella, a local surf spot that quickly became my favorite place. Here, I found a community of surfers who shared my passion and helped me improve. Marbella’s waves were challenging, perfect for someone like me who loved pushing limits and exploring new breaks.
This period was crucial. I wasn’t just surfing for fun anymore—I was learning about board repair, wave dynamics, and surf culture. I started fixing boards, which gave me a deeper connection to the sport and a practical skill that would support me later.
Growing at Witches Rock
At 21, I began working at Witches Rock, a famous surf spot in Costa Rica. I started by repairing boards, but my role quickly expanded. I became a surf instructor, teaching beginners how to catch their first waves. Eventually, I was promoted to head surf coach.
Working at Witches Rock gave me a new perspective. Teaching others helped me understand surfing on a deeper level. I learned how to communicate techniques clearly and motivate people to overcome their fears. This experience shaped my approach to surfing as a holistic lifestyle, not just a sport.
Exploring the World Through Surfing
Surfing took me beyond Costa Rica. I traveled to many countries, chasing waves and learning from different surf cultures. Each place taught me something new—whether it was a unique wave, a local tradition, or a fresh way to connect with nature.
Traveling also tested my resilience. Living out of a suitcase, adapting to new environments, and constantly searching for the next great wave wasn’t always easy. But it kept me growing and reminded me why I fell in love with surfing in the first place.
Living the Dream Full Time
Today, surfing is more than a passion—it’s my full-time life. I wake up every day with the ocean in mind, whether I’m coaching, repairing boards, or exploring new spots. Surfing has given me purpose, community, and a way to stay connected to what matters most: family, faith, and the natural world.
My journey from homelessness to a life shaped by waves shows how powerful passion and perseverance can be. Surfing gave me a path when I had none, and it continues to guide me every day.
